Remember Kia’s cute little hamster ad for their Soul compact? Well, it’s so adorable and catchy it won an award. And not just any accolade – The Nielson Best Ad Award. According to Nielson, the people who put boxes in homes to record inaccurate TV show ratings (I mean, why else would Pushing Daisies be canceled?) Kia’s A new way to roll commercial with the hamsters driving a Kia Soul was the most memorable automotive spot.

“Our data show that truly effective advertising starts with a great creative idea,” said Lois Miller, President of Nielsen Automotive. “When you combine that idea with a memorable and unique hook that grabs the viewer’s attention, you are going to get the results that we saw from Kia this year.”

Not much is known about the GMC Granite concept, introduced at this year’s North American International Auto Show, but much comparison has been made between it and The Kia Soul.

Just how similar are the two small, hatchback-like vehicles? Well, they are both owned, in a sense, by General Motors. But what else? Let’s have a look:

Upon first glance, there are many similar design aspects between Granite and Soul. Of course, Soul has already been in production over a year – where GMC’s “Utility Vehicle” is only in production phase. It’s not uncommon to see different auto makers steal…I mean share designs. Example: Honda Insight, Toyota Prius, and to some extent the upcoming Chevy Volt. But let’s look at the facts: “Prices at $13,300, the Soul base model comes with a 122-horsepower, 1.6-liter four-cyl – no automatic transmission is offered with the base engine. The other three Soul trim levels come with a 142-horsepower, 2.0-liter four cyl and a choice of the five-speed manual or a four-speed automatic. At its highest price ($18,900) you are still under $20K for the total Sports version with all available options.”

As for Granite – “Power for the Granite concept comes from a 1.4L turbocharged engine that is part of GM’s new family of small-displacement, highly efficient four-cylinder engines. It is matched with a six-speed transmission.” No word on pricing, but we are guessing Granite won’t break out of the $20 – 25,000 mark, if it wants to stay competitive anyway.

One major difference with Soul & Granite – Kia hasn’t taken the idea of suicide doors under consideration. But at 2010′s NAIAS rear-hung doors seem to be quite an eye-catcher. Whether or not they will remain in a final, practical, release model you’ll just have to wait and see.

Inside, the Granite concept dash looks more like something Harrison Ford should be piloting. Both Kia and GMC really enhance the appearance and usability of their interior compartments. Even base models of lower-end vehicles retain some sort of classy styling inside – materials cost money, but cool ideas are free flowing. We’ll wait and see what Granite ends up looking like, and how it will truly compare to Kia’s Soul.

Kia’s got a lot of Soul, and in 2010 will come out with an updated version. The 2010 Kia Soul isn’t receiving much of an engine lift this holiday season, but the Soul will get its Ignition pumped up. Kia’s special-edition Ignition Souls are factory customs with a lot of visual upgrades with nothing new on the performance side. The Ignition is the second special-edition Soul, following last summer’s Denim Soul (pictured in gray) which didn’t actually have denim inside.

At a starting price of $18,195, It comes with rally-inspired skin painted Ignition Orange and wearing offset black racing stripes. There’s also black 18-inch wheels with machined accents, a sunroof, and an alloy fuel-filler door.

Inside, Ignition Soul has black cloth seats with Soul print on the backrests, an upgraded stereo with six speakers, a subwoofer, a 315-watt amp, and seizure-inducing speaker lights that pulse with the beat of the music. An iPod connection cable and Bluetooth round out the stereo upgrades.

Kia is once again getting on board with social networking and advertising – by introducing the cutely fun “Go Hamster Go!” Face Book application. Face book apps are right up there with iPhone apps in popularity, allowing companies to promote their wears with flash games, contests and content playable right there on your laptop or phone.

The game pits you as a magnet controller lifting as many adorable hamsters as possible into 2010 Kia Souls, but you better watch out for those slippery fishes, they’re out to get ya! The game is pretty absurd, and also requires the download of an .exe file and instillation of a webcam. Check out the press release below – and try out the game on Face Book: Go Hamster Go!

Kia Motors wants to connect with customers and potential customers via a new Facebook application, but if you don’t have a webcam, you’re out of luck.

The paw-tapping, music-loving hamsters seen in the automaker’s current ad campaign are featured in the “Go Hamster Go!” app, which is Kia’s first-ever augmented reality game and first Facebook application.

“Strategically, this effort is about quality of interaction, not broad reach — that’s what TV and portal ads are for,” says Dave Schoonover, Kia Motors America national manager, CRM and affiliate marketing. “Facebook is recognized as a quality service where many of our target audience congregate. We felt it would be a natural fit.”

Other elements of the Soul launch have included a non webcam-required game, “Escape from Hamsterdam. “During the pre-launch phase we had some special mobile applications such as our iMeem sponsorship or our Soul Cards bar code scanning, and we have mobile launch advertising as well which is driving over 100,000 unique visitors per month to Kia’s mobile website,” Schoonover tells Marketing Daily.

The application, created by digital marketing agency Total Immersion in association with marketing agencies Initiative and David & Goliath, is available on the Kia Soul Facebook Page, www.facebook.com/kiasoul, through the “Go Hamster Go!” tab. The home page for the app, apps.facebook.com/gohamstergo/, offers tabs to “Meet the Soul,” which takes users to kiasoul.com. Users can also opt to click on a link to watch the TV spot.

The interactive application, which had more than 6,200 players as of 5 p.m. Aug. 4, places users into the game, allowing them to race against the clock in an augmented reality experience with the Soul ad campaign hamsters. Using facial recognition technology, the player controls the competition with his or her face using a virtual magnet that “connects” to his or her forehead. The object of the game is to grab a hamster with the magnet as it comes off of a conveyer belt and place it into a Soul as an onscreen clock ticks down.

The webcam requirement probably isn’t a problem for the Kia Soul’s younger target demographic, which is ages 18-34, educated and a slightly male skew. “This would not be the right thing to do for many of our other older models,” Schoonover says. “But 70% of laptops today are shipped with built-in webcams. So, for the Soul audience, yes all the way.”

Brandon Evans, managing partner, strategy and services at New York-based Mr Youth, says the social media agency advises clients to skip applications that require webcams if their goal is broad reach. “We’ve had a lot of clients asking about augmented reality usage,” Evans says. “It really depends on what their goals are as to whether this makes sense for them or not. If you’re trying to reach a tech blog audience and get them to write about how cool it is, there could be a halo effect.”

Using cutting-edge technology can position a brand as forward-thinking, Evans said. But he believes mass adoption of webcams is still about a year away.

MediaPost’s Social Media Insider columnist Catharine P. Taylor says while using a webcam personalizes games for individuals, it can be a turnoff for someone who wants to connect with the brand but doesn’t have the technology. “They could have had two options for the game, one using a webcam and one not,” she says. “Then you have the potential of reaching more people. With so much media fragmentation, you really need to appeal to the lowest common denominator.”

Since the application is Facebook-based, it might have made sense to also have an option that just ports in one’s Facebook picture, says David Berkowitz, director of emerging media and client strategy at New York-based 360i. “Webcams do exclude people, though they are increasingly built into new laptops and are more common for video chat,” Berkowitz says.

Prices begin at $13,300 for the Soul base model with a 122-horsepower, 1.6-liter four-cyl – no automatic transmission is offered with the base engine. The other three Soul trim levels — Plus, Exclaim and Sport — come with a 142-horsepower, 2.0-liter four cyl and a choice of the five-speed manual or a four-speed automatic. At its highest price ($18,900) you are still under $20K for the total Sports version with all available options.

Kia has been trying to make a name for itself since the early 2000′s, when cheaper made vehicles were their bread and butter. Since then, with sportier versions of the Rio5 and Spectra5 have garnered positive attention from both reviewers and fans. It looks like with Soul Kia may finally grab some respect from car buyers.
